But yes you can. The access points can be run without a controller, they will just continue to use the last configuration. You will need a controller to configure them, it might be technically possible to do this via the command line but you might as well just setup your own Linux computer with a wifi card.. So thats the reasons I've commonly seen for using unifi. For a lot of old houses, without ethernet runs, its expensive to get ethernet runs around the house. For APs or anything. The cloudkey is just a unifi controller capable of unifi network and protect. The Ultra is ultra because it is both a gateway/router (Ubiquiti use gateway as another word for router) and a unifi controller however it only does network and not protect.I’m guessing it depends on how strong your connection speed is when remotely viewing.
